Da Vinci's Drawmaton The Robot Automaton

A working model of Leonardo da Vinci's early computer, a wooden programmable robot that draws.

You’ll get The Robot kit that includes all laser cut wood and metal pieces to assemble da Vinci’s machine. Also comes with 2 sets of Programming Petalos to make the Robot draw 2 single line pictures. Includes a six-layer medallion of the Robot. Single color wood is used in this kit.

Leonardo da Vinci's Drawmatons are mechanical wooden machines operated by hand, just as it was in the master's day, by turning a small gear knob which activates a larger gear.

The large gear rotates a read-only assembly which sends information down to the Robot's arm and hand via cams called Programming Petals.

Put any drawing tool into the Robot's hand, place a piece of paper into the draw area, slowly turn the small gear knob and viola!  The Robot draws a single line picture!

Leonardo da VInci loved robs and built them to entertain his friends and even kings and queens.  Da Vinci's Drawmaton is based on Leonardo's Robot Knight, built around 1495, which is considered to be history's first robot.  The Robot Knight could perform many actions, such as shaking hands, playing the drums and could even hug an amused guest.  But it was also rumored that the robot had another special skilll, it could draw a picture.

Many consider da Vinci's robots to be the oldest examples of an early proto-computer because they contained hardware, the robot itself, and software, wooden cams, which were read-only and interchangeable.  Leonardo called these wooden cams "petals" because they reminded him of the petals of a flower.

A set of programing petals for Da VInci's Drawmaton stores 1 kilobit of pre-defined motion data.  When the petals complete one full rotation, infomation is sent down the robot's arm and into the hand, which draws a pictue.

  • Da Vincis Drawmaton Automaton 'The Robot'

Collaborating with Robert Sabuda, the ROKR team has brought an invention of Da Vinci into being. It’s said that this prototype was probably the first programming robot ever in the world! This jointly-designed model series has three styles to choose from: the Robot, the Slayer and the Gambler. Each bears its own characteristic emblem.

Drawmaton is able to draw different artistic patterns by switching to corresponding gear disk.  Crank the handle steadily and an art work comes out gradually under the mechanical robot arm.  Put any drawing tool into the Robot's hand, place a piece of paper into the draw area, slowly turn the small gear knob and viola!  The Robot draws a single line picture!

The machine is made only of wood and a few pieces of metal which come in a kit form for you to assemble and activate.

This item is sealed brand new in box.
